Between code and canvas
I'm Tianyu Ge — a PhD candidate in HCI at Virginia Tech with an MFA in Creative Technologies. I build interactive systems where the hardware, the software, and the person using it all have to work together: installations at the Smithsonian and SIGGRAPH, a biosignal interface for live performance, a wearable that ran for three seasons of field research.
My work sits at the seam between engineering and art practice. Some projects start as research questions — how do you keep a wearable's firmware crash-resilient inside 100KB of memory, or reconstruct a 3D object from whatever crowdsourced photos exist on the internet right now — and end up asking something about trust, memory, or presence along the way. Others start as art pieces — a fake 90s encyclopedia that quietly hallucinates, a performance scored from its performers' own heart rate data — and lean hard on the same engineering instincts.
I'm equally comfortable writing firmware or shipping a UI, and I like projects that force the two together: embedded systems that have to survive a museum floor, interaction design that has to hold up across every level of technical familiarity, pipelines that catch their own failures before they become invisible.
